ELS is hiring for the position of Specialist - Tax in Chicago, Illinois.



This role is responsible for monthly sales tax compliance, ensuring accurate and timely filing of our multi-state sales tax returns, as well as providing support to the Senior Sales Tax Manager on audit defense and special projects. This role will research tax laws and correspond with taxing agencies, as necessary.



ESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTIONS:


  • Gather and review monthly, quarterly, and annual tax data for all locations to compute tax due across multiple state and local taxing authorities.
  • Timely complete the necessary steps to create the monthly sales tax data files to send to our sales tax outsourcer.
  • File sales tax returns prepared in-house accurately and on time with the appropriate taxing authorities.
  • Maintain the sales tax calendar and notice log updated.
  • Assist with monitoring the sales tax group inbox and respond to internal and external tax requests in a timely manner including the completion of resale certificates and W9 tax forms.
  • Coordinate and improve the sales tax data procedures for our outsourced and in-house sales tax filings.
  • Research sales tax issues and questions from the various properties as they arise and assigned by the Senior Sales Tax Manager.
  • Work with the property accounting department to determine tax due across multiple taxing authorities and assist with sales tax payable account reconciliations.
  • Assist with sales tax audits including gathering and reviewing purchase invoices, pulling reports such as trial balances, general ledger downloads, and queries as needed.
  • Interact with our properties to address sales tax problems, procedures, rates, and other sales tax related issues.
  • Monitor, research, and answer sales tax notices to ensure prompt resolution.
  • Assist with tax permit registrations and renewals.


SKILLS, EDUCATION, AND EXPERIENCE


  • Bachelor's degree in accounting.
  • 1-3 years experience working with sales tax compliance.
  • Excellent Excel skills including a proven track record with pivot tables, v-lookups, and other advanced Excel skills.
  • Detailed-oriented, excellent organizational, time management and project management skills.
  • Excellent communication skills.
